Mobitel hosts Google I/O Extended Colombo Conference for the first time in Sri Lanka

Wednesday, May 15, 2013, Colombo: The National Mobile Service Provider, Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel hosted the live-streaming of the Google I/O Extended Conference in Colombo at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute today. The event, streamed live from San Francisco which commenced at 7pm on the 15th ran throughout the night with an overwhelming participation by Sri Lankan developers.
 
‘Google I/O Extended Colombo Conference’ is the event organized for people who are unable to attend the live conference in San Francisco. ‘Google I/O Extended’ enables developers all over the world to attend local viewing parties hosted by Google offices, Google Developer Groups (GDGs), and student ambassadors.
 
Google I/O is an annual developer-focused conference held by IT heavyweight Google, featuring highly technical, in-depth sessions focused on building web, mobile, and enterprise applications with Google and open web technologies such as Android, Chrome, Chrome OS, Google APIs, Google Web Toolkit, App Engine and more. This event has been held annually since 2008 and the hosts saw a participation of over 5500 web, mobile, and enterprise developers this year. They contributed in building applications in the cloud with Google and open web technologies, during the interactive sessions in San Francisco.
 
This event was planned by Google Sri Lanka and Mobitel, allowing members of the IT fraternity in Sri Lanka to not only experience and interact with developers around the world but also to connect with other talented developers in Sri Lanka and play a pivotal part in the local interactive sessions like ‘Business Opportunities in Android developments in Sri Lanka’ and ‘Trends in the mobile telecommunication industry’ and Hackathon Sessions (an event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development, including graphic designers, interface designers and project managers, collaborate intensively on software projects) with demonstrations.
 
The live sessions from San Francisco included: New in Android developer tools, new developments in Mobile Gaming, making location meaningful with Google Maps API and Instant Mobile Websites.
 
With free WIFI that was available throughout the event participants were able to stay connected right throughout the 12-hour long event. Mobitel as the National Mobile Service Provider, that stands in the forefront of introducing the latest innovations to the masses lives up to its credo of ‘We Care. Always.’ by being the hosting partner for such an extensive event for the first time in Sri Lanka.
